Many thanks for flagging up this article, Ted. By coincidence, I had just been reading about Sakamoto Ryoma in Christopher Harding's excellent "The Japanese: A history in twenty lives" (recommended), and your on-the-spot account helped to bring the story to life. Great stuff .... and, now, what about a series about historical figures along the same lines as this one?

I definitely plan to do a follow up piece on related sites in Kyoto. I may also do one on the Isshin no Michi, his escape route from Kochi...

For at least a decade I have a couple of books in mind, about walks done related to cultural figures. Eventually...
